About the VCC PDF Print E-mail

Based in St Albans, the Verulam Cycling Club is one of the oldest and most active cycling groups in the area. The VCC is designed to cater for all standards, from beginner to competitive racer. Among its activities are weekly runs on Sundays, regular participation in sportives and a lively weekly schedule of racing, socialising and training. We have riders of all abilities and most ages: our oldest is 82 and our youngest is 16.  If you are 14 or over, why not give us a try? Our common interest is that we all love riding a bike!

2-Jun-2013: The Chiltern 100 Sportive. This event is non-profit making and is organised by sportifs for sportifs. We aim to provide all the top services and at best value of any UK Cyclosportive.

23-Jun-2013: Ride4aReason. Ride for a Reason is designed by some of Hertfordshire’s most enthusiastic cyclists who know the roads well. It’s an organised way for anybody to enjoy a day in some of Hertfordshire’s nicest countryside with lots of other people who ride bikes. There’s no pressure, no racing, and the routes we’ve designed do their best to avoid busy roads. To make sure it goes OK, the route is very well signposted, and there are marshalls at all key points. There are checkpoints en-route with refreshments and experts if you have a problem and if it all goes wrong, people are on hand to get you back to base. Once you’ve finished, back at base you’ll find tea and cake to finish off what we hope will have been a fantastic day out.

7-Sep-2013: TMG Horizon & Verulam CC: LVRC Region 7 Criterium Championships. Veterans circuit racing at Hog Hill, Redbridge. Medals!

13-May-2013: Latest update on Steve Clarke, courtesy of Neil Wass

9-May-2013: A record turnout (32 riders!) for our first Evening 10 in sunny and dry conditions; A marked contrast to the floods of this event last season. Lots of close times, improvements on last year and good to see a number of newcomers trying their hand and enjoying the challenge. Report... Results... (see page 3), Seabird Standings

6-May-2013: Apologies that I haven't had time to write a report on our amazing trip to Majorca last month. 43 members were blessed with glorious sunshine and super week of cycling around the island. Photos now on-line - to make you jealous!

6-May-2013: We all had a great time at the Hog Hill Experience Day. 22 riders signed up and we spent 2 hours focused on coaching - from basic skills (braking, cornering etc.) to tight group riding. Then an hour of fun races. Many thanks to Kim Coe, Dick Morgan, David Yorke and Innis Yorke (club commentator - at 9!) for coming out to help. Report...

5-May-2013: A brief note to pass all of our thoughts & hopes for Steve Clarke who was involved in a crash with his son Ross on Wednesday evening. Please contact me (link above) for further information as I receive it

5-May-2013: Steve Maxted was the surprise Silver Medalist at LVRC Region 9 Championships. A superb result in only his second season on the road. Paul Caton, Colin Hodges, Steve Kay and Matt Pumo were also in the thick of the action for the various age categories. Report...

29-Apr-2013: Alex Balbi was top dog at our Roller Racing Competition tonight. Nick Saunders gave him a close run before running out of legs with just 1/4 lap-to-go. Sam Skuce went home with the bronze medal

29-Apr-2013: Good to see that the Verulam CC are really starting to make a mark on the masters road racing scene: Nick Coe took an excellent 4th place in the Finchley Road Race and was King of the "Molehills" :) Paul Cackett, Paul Caton, Matt Pumo, Steve Kay, Steve Maxted were also in the thick of the action. Report...

28-Apr-2013: Shu Pillinger completed the Mallorca 312 (k that is) yesterday - a loop of the island in just over 13 hours (12:38 cycling time). "Weather conditions: the usual for me - non-stop rain and wind. I'm beginning to take it personally - one day I hope to have an event in sunshine! A scan of the results seems to show three faster women, so I'll happily settle for a 4th place." Congratulations Shu!

28-Apr-2013: Saturday 10-mile TT: A great turnout of 20 riders, in very cold and windy/showery conditions. Apologies, but we had problems with timings, so some data missing, and times subject to confirmation. Results... (see page 2) Seabird Standings

25-Apr-2013: Verulam CC was out in force this weekend with a strong field of riders racing in the first MSTina race of the year – the Ciclisti Vecchi RR on a hilly course in Herriard. Paul Caton (first claim TMG Horizon), Gavin Bench, Nick Coe and Paul Cackett were on in the C/D race early in the morning. Steve Maxted and Matt Pumo raced the A/B race later in the day.  Overall a great few races for Verulam with nearly every rider placing and picking up prize money. Report...

24-Apr-2013: The Verulam CC has safely (well almost) returned from their week in Majorca. We were blessed with a stunning week of sunshine and quality riding with 3-4 groups out every day (43 of us in all!). A very popular adventure which is sure to be repeated next year. Report to come. Photos...

9-Apr-2013: Steve Maxted was top dog at our Hardriders TT with a super turnout of 30 riders. Note from Nick:"Well done to all those who rode the Hardriders TT on Sunday, in cold but sunny conditions, including a number of brave newcomers. Thanks to all marshals and timekeepers also". Results Seabird Standings

8-Apr-2013: Troy Backhouse rode the Wiggle Spring Saddle Sportive 100 miles on Sunday. "Great ride & great weather :)"

8-Apr-2013: I too was in action in "The Joker" Sportive down between Salisbury & Shaftesbury. Plenty of 20% brutes to climb, including the 25% cobbled climb of Gold Hill - as used in the Hovis advert. Joy :)

2-Apr-2013: Graham Ricketts rode the London Phoenix Easter Classic yesterday. Quote: "Not a bad run out today, dry and bright (ish), although the organisers failed in their guarantee of a tailwind, seemed like head/cross winds pretty much the whole way round !. Good turnout though and great cakes at the food stop, although I was hoping for more than a single Cadbury’s Creme egg at the end!" http://connect.garmin.com/activity/291788027

1-Apr-2013: Good to see that we had 13 riders down for the Welwyn Wheelers Hilly TT. Nick Coe has summed up our results...

31-Mar-2013: Paul Cackett, Paul Caton, Paul Moody (the 3 Pauls!) and me (Doug) rode the Ronde Van Vlaanderen (aka Tour of Flanders) cyclo on Saturday. A nightmare journey down on Friday with the traffic & Eurotunnel, but it was all worth it. A dry day in biting cold conditions and a late start because some Muppet forgot their shoes! Fortunately a shop opened at 8:30 (start was at 7) and it was incident free from there on. Chips & mayo at the finish were as good as ever :)

25-Mar-2013: I had 7 hardy souls out mountain biking with me yesterday. Sub-zero all day and our 2-hour ride ended up taking 4-hours! Slush & mud; Horrid conditions :( Also saw Matt Pumo out with the racers (8 of them?) at the half way point. They looked as exhausted as we were :/

18-Mar-2013: Shu Pillinger completed the Wiggle No Excuses Sportive in the Gold standard on Saturday, recording the second fastest ladies' time for the second year running. The Epic distance was cancelled by the organisers because of the weather, so thankfully they only had to battle the wind and drizzle for 40 miles! A great start to the season. Congratulations Shu

15-Mar-2013: The season begins! Our club colours were on display at the Ciclos Uno Spring Road Race today on a wet morning at Tipps Cross, Blackmore. Paul Cackett, Nick Coe, Colin Hodges, Steve Kay and Steve Maxted were in action. Brief report from Steve Maxted...

13-Mar-2013: Dave Atherton took the honors at our Bike de Elegance evening on Monday with his trusty steel James Fothergill track bike (1958). This bike 'has some history' (see the last club mag) having being stolen and then rediscovered nearly 40 years later at a tip! Nick Coe was a close 2nd with his flashy new Trek Madone with the very latest 11-speed Dura Ace Di2 kit. Many thanks to all that made the effort to bring their precious pride & joys along!

12-Mar-2013: Victoria Williams surprised everybody with a win (!) on her first weekend of road racing at the Mid-Shropshire Wheelers Circuit Race plus a fine 8th place on Saturday in the Wolverhampton Wheelers Circuit Race. Both of them were at the Sundorne Circuit in Shrewsbury. Congratulations Victoria!

12-Mar-2013: Mark Antcliffe, Hazel Davies and Andrew Rice braved the conditions on Sunday to ride the Puncheur Sportive - around Ditchling Beacon and the Ashdown Forest. Mark clocked an excellent 3hrs 45' and was one of the top riders on the day. Andy managed to break his gear cable just before the climb up to the Beacon. Some ingenious bodging saved the day though!

6-Mar-2013: Congratulations to the 20 or so riders who completed the Harp Hilly Hundred on Sunday, winning VCC the trophy for another year. A good ride in reasonable conditions for a change, despite some bad road surfaces. At least there was no ice like we had on the Luton event the previous week.

28-Feb-2013: Hazel Davies and Andrew Rice were in action at the Hell of the Ashdown on Sunday. A bitter cold day meant cold tootsies and a hell of a day! Evidently nice hot cuppas at the refreshment stops helped get them through though :)

26-Feb-2013: Good fun was had by all at the Roller Competition last night. Gavin Bench eventually came through with the honors despite a flying start from Mr Samuel Skuce. Many thanks to Tony Brazier for pulling everything together!

6-Feb-2013: A quick thank you to Lucy Cuppleditch for a thoroughly entertaining account of her ride from Land's End to John O'Groats at the club room. Some 40 people came along to see what is clearly a subject of interest to many. Photos...

23-Jan-2013: The Wednesday "shirkers" out having fun. Spot the new member!

20-Jan-2013: Snow snow snow! This didn't put some of us hardy souls off though. Around 20 turned up for my MTB ride today. Veeery slippery out there. Several falls, but nothing too serious thank goodness. Photo courtesy of Andy Rice ...

14-Jan-2013: No club run on Sunday :( but this did at least give many of us an excuse to go out for some fun on our mountain bikes. Around 16 in my group and maybe 10 with Matt Pumo - travelling on the same route but in reverse. There were a few gloopy sections that caused a few embarrassing moments for some :) but it was all rideable. You should give it a try sometime!

10-Jan-2013: We had a full house at the club room on Monday to enjoy the mince pies and mulled wine put on by Dave & Val Korson. Thank you both. We definitely do need a bigger club room!
