Mike Hilton - Membership Secretary
Club member since 2001
My cycling story...
I joined VCC in late 2001, having noticed groups of riders leaving from the Old Town Hall chatting and having a good time. Prior to that I had been out and about biking on my own, essentially trying to be more active and lose weight after letting myself go due to work pressures! Although I had been a regular bike user all my life, I had concentrated more on football, running, cricket and squash during my earlier years. I absolutely loved group cycling when I started, and wished I had known about VCC earlier. I found it wonderful to cycle 70 mile loops into amazing countryside. I've done a number of events over the years, including the Maratona in the Italian Dolomites (twice and very slowly), Land's End to John O'Groats, City of London to Monte Carlo, plus many other cyclosportives. I was also one of the earliest participants in the Chiltern 100, a very tough ride! I was a regular bike commuter into London for many years, and led the Mods group until around 2013.
About my role...
My role as Membership Secretary is to respond to initial enquiries from potential new members, then guide them through the application process and the Introductory Rides. I have just started over the past couple of months, so am currently getting to grips with it all!
More about me...
In terms of recent years, I retired in 2018 as I needed some ongoing treatment for prostate cancer. Since then I have spent most of my time spinning in the gym, biking on the road and long distance walking in Spain & Portugal. I cycled across New Zealand at the end of 2019, and am also a Community School Governor. It all keeps me busy!
