My cycling story...
I've always been active in competitive sport, but I started cycling, by accident! In 2011 and before the youth development section my 14 year old son wanted to join VCC. 'Well you'll have to come with him' came the answer. It was October, the winter would see if he really was keen . He was.
Starting in the Sociables with the guiding hand of Bill and Mike was a perfect introduction to club cycling and over time we gradually moved to faster paced groups, learning how bikes actually worked. And obviously collecting more bikes as time moved on. My son of course 'dropped me' out the back long ago, but the bug has stuck!
Since then it's been everything from reliability rides, sportives, crit racing, club 10 and 25 mile TTs to even a few 50s. All of this confirmed what I already knew - not very fast but can ride a long way. So nowadays it's Audax that fills my time with London-Edinburgh-London and Paris-Brest-Paris ticked off.
As part of a motley crew I've been also picking off the spring classic sportives (and Belgian beers) each year and also trips to the Alps, Pyrenees and Dolomites.
I help in organising the club Reliability Ride each year so may well (have) serve(d) you tea or coffee at some point!
About my role...
I joined the Committee at the tail end of 2023 and have a general role in supporting members interests across the wide spectrum of club activities and hopefully being helpful with committee workload, particularly in exploring ideas where my newness allows me to get away with asking those silly questions.
More about me...
I'm married to Ruth having met at college when we were both studying Sports Science. We have three adult bank account draining sons. Luckily all five of us are interested in all things sport related but it can make for highly competitive activities, even when completing jigsaws. I retired recently after 31 years in the NHS, working in mental health and learning disability services based in Hertfordshire but covering much of East England. When I'm not on my bike we spend a lot of time walking (with dog) and as much time outdoors as possible.
